[Chugalug] DNS Issue?

Jonathan Calloway
Is there some kind of DNS issue going on right now?

I can’t exactly put my finger on why I’m wondering. .

Using Google DNS here...no issues at all.

Who are you using.....don't say EPB....because if you are, that's likely you're problem....

Jonathan Calloway
Using OpenDNS, and my account is inactive.  Seems that my IP address changed, but nobody on the internet realizes it. . .

Still looking into it. .

Re: [Chugalug] DNS Issue?

Sorry John Dills :-)  I love you guys....except for the DNS.   To be honest, I haven't used your DNS in a while now, so it may have gotten better.  But there for a while, it was hit or miss, so much so that I decided to use Google's DNS to have some usability.

But, I am also the type of person who believes you should never use ISP provided DNS.  EPB are good people, but not all ISP's are good people.  A true solution is decentralized DNS but thats a talk for another day.

My ONLY pain points for EPB are:
1. DNS issues in the past
2. Not able to buy statics for residential accounts. I would LOVE to bring my personal sites and lab here to my mini-DC at my house, but I need a few statics for that.
3. Would like to see some other business service offerings / Pro-Sumer level stuff to address #2 above.

And lets be honest.... those are some very very minor pain points :-)   I actually put in the contract on my new home that it had to be serviceable by EPB as a condition of sale. The realtor thought that was an oddly funny request.

Do you have a 100.64.x.x IP address?  If so, call EPB and ask to be
removed from the CGN/LSN configuration.

Carrier-Grade-NAT or Large-Scale-NAT.  If you need a reason, it
interferes with your ability to VPN to $work.

Re: [Chugalug] DNS Issue?

Yes.  I am getting a 100.x

That must be what it is.  I'm assuming that's an easy ask and won't incur some crazy charge?

Re: [Chugalug] DNS Issue?

David White-2
John (and Lynn) - I think I already know the answer to this, but I'll ask it anyway: Is it possible to just convert the connection from a residential account into a "business" account? The lowest cost tier is still the same price.... I guess it gets more expensive for the business account if you need speeds faster than 100Mbps though, so maybe you wouldn't want to do that.

What I think is the answer: I'm pretty sure that I've heard in the past that EPB does not let you put a business account into a residential location (home). That would be really nice, though.

Also, Jonathan: Dave is right. NAT is probably the issue here. Every time I've turned up new service, I've had to call EPB to get NAT turned off.

Yeah... I use Google DNS at home.
I wish we offered statics for resi, too! Maybe IPv6 will eventually prosper and you can get a block of static IPv6 addresses for your home

I'm not sure exactly what the requirements are, but you can get a
business circuit at a residential address.  I believe you get a 100Mb
business for the price of 1Gb residential.  And a $20 premium for that
static IP address you need/want.

Nope, AFAIK, the first tier of support can make it happen, and "please
remove the NAT" usually is all that is required.  No charge that I am
aware of, but you may have to manually refresh your lease on your WAN
connection.

dtb

If for some reason, you can't get NAT disabled let me know.

And yes, you *CAN* get a business account at a residential address.
