[Chugalug] For members not on EPB...

Mike Harrison-4
Fellow Linux nutcases, especially the ones not on EPB in Chattanooga. I need some help.

Would you please click:  https://portal.ring-u.com/portal/connection.php

To help me collect some speed test data? Preferably from a physical internet connection (not mobile data on a mobile phone).

The “grade” you will get afterwards is currently completely bogus, because I have no data to base the grades on.

My goal, our goal, is to let prospective customers get an indication of what their expected success will be, using VoIP/SIP based internet telephony.

As we collect some data, I will share the results.

This speed test is very basic and rough.. will tuned it up more soon.

Not sure if my test went through EPB or through our corporate data center in Plano TX.  I presume the latter, but can't be sure, I didn't set up the network here.

Huh. At a guess, I'd say you're pretty bandwidth limited at your server.

Two tests, one from WiFi, one hard-wired. Wifi said 14 down, 6 up, 224
ms ping.

Google's speed test on that same machine said 18 down 5 up. Another Bay
Area speed test said 24 down.

Hard-wired, said 6.84 down, 7.51 up, 670.12 latency (!!!!), so I ran it
again, 14.62 down, 7.6 up, 97.27 latency.

For that same machine, Google says 37.8 down, 5.2 up, 31ms latency, a
Bay Area speed test says 50 down, 5.7 up, 24ms...

Bingo.

Currently yes.

It’s  a small Linode. And ya’ll testing has proven that it’s not a very valid test. Thank You!

Which is enough to make me go “Hmmm…” and maybe we’ll find a better way of doing this. There are providers of such services…

The good news is, this isn’t what does the back end telco.. it’s just a customer portal server.

Raw data, of very marginal usefulness, which in of itself is useful.

Just for giggles, from  down in here in Hammond, LA, I'm getting 222.51M down, 98.30M up, 33.43ms, with a grade of A...

Looks like I'm 12 hops away total, and the traffic is going out my Dallas POP to the internap fabric .

Is your server in Dallas? It's only a couple of hops past the internap fabric from my Dallas POP.

Those results were phenomenal. Thank you. Blew a 10gb EPB Fiber connection away. I really like the negative ping times, you most be slightly prescient.

I’m not sure what a negative 30-40 millisecond advantage gets you unless you are high volume trading stocks in real-time. Oh. THAT’s how you afford all those Nova’s and cool computers. ;)

Now shows the raw data collected, including Ed’s "Telekineses Ethereal” from *:*:*:*:1 at the top of the stack.

What it really did, was demonstrate the variables involved in a decent speed test, including the server capacity and various other issued involved in a point to point speed test via a web browser and endpoints that might also be on wifi.. There are a couple of hosted solutions for sale, most using Flash although some are using Javascript.. but right now spending a few grand to solve a “not really a problem yet” problem isn’t going to happen. Seriously thinking about doing it even simpler and just asking them a few questions.
