[Chugalug] Job hunting - Linux Server Admin

David White-2
Many of you know that I accepted a job this past summer with TVA (as a contractor, of course). While I am continuing to run Develop CENTS on the side, I modified the business model and am now only providing remote server administration, managed web hosting, and some WordPress services (I blogged about that transition at https://developcents.com/2017/08/02/shifting-business-model/).

TVA has been a fairly good fit. I like my team members, and I think my manager is doing a fantastic job.

Unfortunately, when I was hired, my job recruiter gave me bad advice over the phone that I took at face value. To make a long story short, I'm making about $1k per month less than I really need.

I've had several conversations with my contracting agency, and neither they nor TVA are able to get me what I need (and nowhere near as quickly as I need it).

So I'm back in the job market.

My updated resume can be found at https://davidmartinwhite.com, and my profile on ServerFault can be found at https://serverfault.com/users/57332/david-w.

I am willing to work remote, and I might be willing to travel up to 10-15% per year (but not any more than that).

I am not willing to relocate.

If you hear of anything in the Chattanooga area, or a remote opportunity, that might be a good fit for me, would you please pass it on?

Thanks in advance,
David

We are hiring at Red Hat 😀. There are some remote positions, and some of the sales positions are regional so travel would he local.  We have superb benefits and damn good pay.  If you are interested give our jobs site a look:. https://www.redhat.com/en/jobs.

I'f you find something that might fit, send me an email at [hidden email] and I can get you in our ambassador program which helps you get in front of the line for interviews.  I also get a nice bonus if you get hired too. Heh.

Thanks, Lynn! I was actually looking at Red Hat's website a day or two ago. I would definitely be interested in working for Red Hat (and the bulk of my sys admin experience is with CentOS, which is close enough!), but I didn't see anything listed that looked like it would be a great fit. I wouldn't be interested in the sales positions, partly due to the travel involved -- I would want more of a systems administration / DevOps role.

I'll keep on eye on the job postings, and if I come across something, I'll be sure to reach out to you.

Re: [Chugalug] Job hunting - Linux Server Admin

Lynn Dixon
I should also add, don’t be afraid to query about jobs that are listed as being in another city...for example Boston.  We have a huge engineering presence in Boston so the job may be “officed” there, but it might still be eligible for remote work.  That can throw some people off because the listing my not explicitly say it.  Red Hat is LLCd in most of the states, but not all of them yet, so there are some states that doesn’t qualify for remote work due to state worker laws.  However, we are llcd in TN so it’s eligible for remote work.   TLDR: if you see a job you like, but are afraid it’s not remote eligible because it’s officed in another state...Ask anyways. Heh.

May the penguin smile upon you,
May the new year be bright,
May -almost- everyone have a better year.
