Top Three Skills:

1. Linux - Strong understanding of general use Linux Systems Administration across multiple enterprise Linux Operating Systems including RedHat, Ubuntu, CentOS, etc. This includes a broader understanding of the overall Linux platform, how it is maintained, and how it integrates with other systems. Candidates should be able to articulate which versions of Linux they have supported and how frequently, the number of Linux Servers they've maintained at one time, how they have supported new server builds/deployments, what processes they follow for patch management, etc.

2. Information Security - Experience understanding information security requirements as they pertain to the basic concepts of Governance/Risk/Compliance as well as experience identifying and managing (patching, etc) server/network-related risks and vulnerabilities as well as some exposure to enterprise monitoring tools, etc. 

3. VMware - Familiarity with deploying/maintaining Linux servers in a VMware environment. Candidates should be able to discuss which versions of VMware they have worked with, how they have worked within virtual environments to deploy, maintain, and support Linux servers, and how many virtual machines they have supported vs physical. 

Job Description:

 

From the beginning this person will spend approximately 70% of their time setting servers up in the lab, testing, deploying, and handling project work. 

Approximately 10-15% of the time will be spent patching systems, responding to escalated trouble tickets, etc.

The remaining time will be spent supporting other business units and technical teams within Cyber Security on their projects such as Storage, Networking, etc.

After the first 6 months they will take on more operational focus and less project/lab work Their days will be more 50/50 between those tasks. 

Additional Information:

 

Strong Linux Engineers should have some knowledge of Scripting but it is not a requirement.

In addition to testing, deploying, and maintaining an Enterprise Linux environment, this person may be tasked with assisting other teams such as the Windows team or the Networking team. Any skills/experience with these will be considered a plus.

ADDITIONAL INFO FROM CLIENT:

The ideal candidate will have experience engineering in a highly complex environment, be familiar with Linux System Administration, Configuration, and System Security using RedHat, Cent
OS and Ubuntu. Experience with Blade server environments, ESXi virtualization, Windows, SAN, network systems, automation and scripting. Additional skills desired include experience designing and/or supporting, and maintaining security monitoring system components, such as network TAPs, Intrusion Detection/Prevention Systems, SIEM, and packet capture systems. 

Additionally, the candidate should exhibit following key abilities: attention to detail, clear verbal and non-verbal communication, problem analysis skills, planning and organizational skills, teamwork, have excellent customer service skills, demonstrate an ability to work with minimal supervision, and be able to lift up to 35 lbs. A Bachelors Degree in Computer Science (or other related field) is desired, but not required for the position.

Up to 10% Travel required. Ability to obtain and maintain Sensitive and NERC CIP Clearances required. 

Work Environment:

 

This team currently has a total of 8 resources and this person will be the primary SME for Linux. 

For the most part this person interacts with the Cyber team, other Systems teams, and some nuclear folks cross the organization. 

Interview Information:

 

Typically a phone interview to start and cover basic technical understanding followed by a second round either on site or via web conference before an offer is made. 

Who is the Internal/External Customer:

This team directly manages/supports infrastructure for the Cyber Security Group as well as Transmission and Nuclear from a monitoring perspective. 

Impact to the Internal/External Customer:

The Cyber Security Operations team supports security monitoring systems at more than 60 facilities across 7 states. Many of these tools rely on fully patched, secure, and operational Linux Servers to remain functional. This person allows those monitoring tools to operate with minimal issues. 

Business Challenge:

 

The Cyber Security team has a variety of industry-leading tools used to detect vulnerabilities, intrusions, threats, etc. Many of these tools rely on Linux Servers to process such tasks so having an effective, healthy Linux environment is critical to the success of the group. 

EVP:

This person will be on the forefront of testing new Linux-based tools/systems/servers/technology ins  lab environment before deploying them to production. This is an opportunity to get hands on time with the latest and greatest in an enterprise, federal, cyber security environment. 

Non-Technical Skills:

 

Strong communication skills, the ability to collaborate with others, the ability to take ownership of tasks, an analytical mindset, attention to detail, documentation skills, written/verbal communication.
