[Chugalug] Seagate issues!

David Rucker

OK so every external Seagate drive I have ever owned dies if I start a copy operation that takes longer then 10 min. It also won't even work if remove it from the enclosure and connect it directly to mobo sata connection. Had a 3tb repaired from Seagate and it died again after getting it back less then a week. So I have never bought Seagate sense. I had a friend that's going over seas and wanted me to load a drive up with movies no biggie but I was afraid I'd have issues. Well sure enough drive died after coping 1 file to it. Now it shows in mmc as not initialized and when you try to initialize it just says device not ready. Any suggestions?

Also note I haven't tried the drive on Ubuntu or Mac osx yet was planning that tonight. But I mean come on why are seagates so crappy?

as Ron White once said... at a certain point, when a thing happens to you every time, you just have to ask... "maybe it's me?"

I’ve had certain models that I went through 3 drives in a year (100% of that model purchased, with the 3rd being purchased after one of the two died), and I got others that are years of use and working fine.

I think some models have some defects.

Re: [Chugalug] Seagate issues!

I too have thought it was me but my dad also has issues with these drives. And I have had them do this on different systems. And only when its a large copy with many files. They do great for me when I copy a single file at a time or many small files but if its a large number of large files after the first few they just stop. Which I have just stuck with WD drives and never have any issues. Maybe I'm just cursed and just kill only Seagate external drives lol!

I never thought about it before, it makes sense that genetics may play a role in bogon field strength.

I have an external SATA docking station for two hard drives. I had a 2 Tb and a 4 Tb hard drive in there, both Seagate. I recently noticed that if I have the 4 Tb and the 2 Tb in there, something goes haywire and the docking station goes off-line. I can only get it to work if I power off the docking station, remove the 2 Tb drive and power it back on. Then I can read/write all day long. Just something about that one 2Tb hard drive... I've ordered another 4 Tb hard drive so I can mirror the two drives. :) Hopefully that'll resolve the issue I've seen.
