=-5^2+5^2 should equal 0
In a version of Excel you get 50.

Here are some Horror Stories

Justin,

That's a pretty questionable formula. The 'sign' of the first integer is the 'negative symbol' and is considered part of the value 'negative five'. I would calculate '-5^2+5^2' to equal 50.

Excel is considered one of the exceptions to the standard for -5^2. Oddly, I would have computed that the same way as Excel. However, if I saw -a^2, I would compute it the same as -(a^2) because the negative sign would be meaningless otherwise.

But what about -a^3? It's the same regardless of how you handle the sign. (-a) * (-a) * (-a) = -(a*a*a)

I added excel to the banned applications list a few jobs ago for Sales... they'd routinely copy customers (and sensitive information) OUT of our CRM and into their excel spreadsheets. God that is a security nightmare, and makes it impossible to sync/reassign/notify of appointments/etc.

Re: [Chugalug] Is LibreOffice *THAT* bad? :(

I'm not even talking about BAD spreadsheets (I can feel my blood pressure rising).  We have a document at work that warns against most of that stuff, but when the recommended best practice is to put totals at the top so that you don't accidentally fill a formula over them, it's a sign that your tools suck.

Hail El Presidente!

Sounds like an excuse to go to the Terminal for lunch, a favorite
lunch/dinner destination. To be clear though, you seem to have posted that
at just past midnight and said tomorrow. Technical that would make the
intended date Tuesday, but I think you mean Monday (looking at another
post you mentioned Monday)

Perhaps you could clarify?

   a. Monday, September 30th.
   b. Tuesday, October 1st.

Of course, my worst case scenerio would be: Both :)
